Our recommendation, by book library.
| Your reading | Our starting recommendation | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Your own DRM-free EPUB or TXT files | XTEINK X4 Pro | A compact local-file reader; XTEINK lists these formats in its detailed specification. |
| A library built around Kindle purchases or Kindle Unlimited | Kindle Paperwhite | A more straightforward choice for access within Amazon’s reading system. |
| Ebook loans from a participating UK library | Kobo Clara BW | Kobo documents UK library borrowing on this model. Your library and the individual title must be supported. |
These are recommendations based on documented compatibility, not a hands-on ranking of screen quality or performance.
Explore XTEINK X4 Pro and buying optionsEPUB is a format. DRM is a separate restriction.
A book ending in “.epub” may still carry digital rights management that restricts where it opens. XTEINK’s detailed specification lists EPUB and TXT. Its current buying guidance asks readers to confirm PDF, MOBI and DRM requirements for their intended use.
For ordinary text-based, DRM-free books, the X4 Pro’s small format is the attraction. If illustrated pages or complex PDFs are your main reading, we would favour a device and screen chosen specifically for those layouts.

Some Kindle purchases now have an export option.
Amazon allows verified purchasers to download EPUB or PDF files for titles whose publishers have confirmed DRM-free downloads. Look for the EPUB option for the particular book in Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices area; this does not apply automatically to every purchase.
Protected Kindle titles remain tied to Kindle apps and devices. Kindle Unlimited and other borrowed titles do not qualify for these downloads. If those books make up most of your reading, our recommendation is to stay within the Kindle system. An eligible EPUB export may suit XTEINK, but we have not tested its rendering on the X4 Pro.

For UK library borrowing, start with the supported route.
XTEINK does not promise Libby account integration. Kobo lists the Clara BW among models with built-in library borrowing support in the UK. Compatible loans can sync using the same library card, but not every ebook will sync, and Libby audiobooks and magazines are not supported on Kobo.
Libby’s “Read With Kindle” delivery is available through U.S. libraries only. A UK library card therefore does not make Kindle the equivalent borrowing option.

Choose the reader that keeps you reading.
If you already enjoy your own compatible EPUB or TXT collection, X4 Pro offers a distinctive way to keep it nearby. Its appeal is a smaller everyday carry, with a built-in light and a choice of controls. Our main guide brings together the Pro versus X3 comparison, current dated UK buying information and the practical trade-offs.
