Smart bird feeder setup: a checklist for UK gardens
Plan a smart bird feeder setup: check Wi-Fi, mounting, charging, app storage and current UK seasonal feeding guidance before you buy or fill it.

Before choosing a camera feeder, check the place where it will live. A good camera will be frustrating if the Wi-Fi drops out, the battery is difficult to reach or the feeder is awkward to clean.
This checklist starts with your garden and routine. Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro is used as a specific example where its requirements matter.

1. Check feeder design and the feeding season first
UK feeding advice changed in 2026. The RSPB currently recommends pausing seeds and peanuts from 1 May to 31 October to reduce disease transmission. Its guidance allows small amounts of mealworms, fatballs or suet during that period. BTO also recommends seasonal feeding, with seeds and peanuts offered from November to April. Feeder design is a separate consideration. RSPB advises against flat feeding surfaces, including feeders with trays. Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro has a feeding tray. This is general RSPB guidance; we have not found an assessment or endorsement of this specific model. RSPB design guidance, Birdfy product imagery
Consider both the seasonal and design guidance when deciding how you will use a feeder. The checks below help you compare its technology and practical requirements.
2. Choose a place you can maintain
Stand at the proposed position and picture three jobs: refilling, removing the camera for charging and taking the feeder apart for cleaning. A location that gives a pleasing photograph may still be a poor everyday choice if those jobs are difficult.
For Birdfy's Feeder 2 series, the manufacturer provides different assembly instructions for wall, pole and tree mounting. Use the method and fixings suited to your chosen surface; inspect the exact unit and instructions before drilling. Birdfy mounting and care instructions
Consider the camera's view as well. Aim it at the feeding area and review what else appears in the frame. Decide whether the position is practical before making a permanent installation.
3. Check Wi-Fi at the feeder, not only indoors
Birdfy specifies 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for the Feeder 2 series. Its pairing instructions require a phone on a suitable network and a strong signal. A connection working beside your router does not establish that the final garden position will work. Birdfy specifications, Birdfy camera pairing
Before buying, check your router's supported bands and whether the intended position has usable coverage. If your router combines bands under one network name, follow its provider's instructions for connecting a 2.4GHz device.
After pairing, temporarily place the camera at the intended location and check live view through the app before securing the mount. This is a practical check to perform yourself; it is not a connection test Renvaryn has carried out in your garden.
4. Charge and pair before final mounting
Birdfy advises fully charging the camera with a suitable wall adapter before installation. Pair it using the app's instructions while the controls and device code are easy to reach. Birdfy charging guidance, Birdfy pairing instructions
Work through the initial setup somewhere convenient, then check the camera in its intended position. Confirm that you can open live view and find the battery status. If pairing fails, note the app's message and follow Birdfy's troubleshooting rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
5. Plan solar access and occasional charging
The Feeder 2 Pro specification includes a 3W solar panel. Birdfy describes solar as a way to maintain the battery; it is not intended to revive a completely drained camera. Available sunlight also matters. Birdfy specifications, Birdfy charging guidance
Check where the panel can receive light without making the feeder difficult to maintain. Keep a practical route for manual charging in your plan and watch the battery trend after installation. Do not treat a solar panel as a promise of year-round charging independence in every UK garden.
6. Understand recordings and AI before choosing a bundle
Birdfy's Feeder 2 series uses cloud storage rather than consumer microSD recording. The stated standard retention period is 30 days. Its AI recognition options and additional cloud services are separate choices, so “lifetime AI” should not be read as every possible future service being included. Birdfy recording and service FAQ
Decide what you actually want: live viewing, recorded visits, species suggestions or sharing with family. Check those functions against the exact package in the retailer's basket. Establish how you will save favourite footage before relying on a retention period.

7. Make care part of the setup
The RSPB recommends removing debris when adding fresh food and cleaning feeders weekly with a mild disinfectant solution. Water containers need fresh water daily and regular disinfection. Follow the device manufacturer's disassembly guidance too, keeping electronic components out of the housing-cleaning process. RSPB feeder hygiene, Birdfy disassembly and housing care
Cleaning does not replace the seasonal food guidance above. Set up a routine that includes inspecting the feeding area, removing spoiled food and checking the current wildlife advice. If you notice sick or dead garden wildlife, BTO points to the Garden Wildlife Health project for reporting. BTO disease reporting guidance
